Transcript

Greek and Roman statues were pure white marble. Except they weren't. They were painted in bright color. Archaeologists using ultraviolet light have found traces of pigment on statue after statue — reds, blues, yellows, even gold leaf — proof these figures were vividly painted from head to toe. Over two thousand years, weather, soil, and scrubbing during excavation stripped that paint away, leaving only bare stone. By the Renaissance, scholars fell in love with the bare white surface and declared it the ideal of classical beauty, a taste that stuck for centuries. Museums have now reconstructed several statues in their original colors, and the effect looks surprisingly bright next to what we expect. That pure white look was never the ancient sculptor's vision — it was accidental erosion, mistaken for design. Would you have preferred the statues painted or plain white?
