Transcript
The iron maiden was a medieval torture device. Except it wasn't. The device didn't even exist yet. No medieval text. No court record. No execution account anywhere in Europe mentions a spiked iron cabinet. The earliest one we can actually find was assembled in the early 1800s, cobbled together from old armor parts and sold as a museum curiosity. One famous example sat in a German castle collection — dressed up with an invented backstory to draw paying visitors. Museum owners in the 1800s realized a spiked coffin made a better attraction than the truth. From there it spread into books and films. So the torture device you picture is a nineteenth-century prop, not a medieval weapon. Would you have fallen for the medieval torture story?
